FAQ

What Is Art Therapy?
Art Therapy is an evidence-based form of psychotherapy that integrates the creative process of artmaking with psychological and therapeutic principles. It supports clients in gaining insight, perspective, and emotional release, while fostering the development of effective coping strategies. Through this process, individuals are empowered to reduce distress, enhance self-awareness, and cultivate greater fulfilment and overall well-being.
Our creative and compassionate approach encourages free expression via drawing, modelling or painting, within a therapeutic frame. At its core, art therapy is about the process of creation and reflection-not the aesthetics of the final piece.
Why Art Therapy Instead of Talk Therapy?
For many people, especially those who have experienced trauma, finding the right words to describe pain can be extremely difficult. Art therapy offers a safe, non-verbal way to express what may feel too overwhelming or inaccessible to speak aloud. Through image, colour, and creative process, clients can symbolically explore, and release emotions stored in the body.
Research shows that traumatic memories are often held in sensory and emotional parts of the brain rather than in language. By engaging in artmaking, clients can gently process experiences, regulate emotions, and begin to rebuild a sense of safety and self-understanding—often where words alone cannot reach.
What Is an Art Therapist?
Registered art therapists are specialist mental health clinicians with post-graduate Master’s level training.
Through their knowledge, experience, and insight, creative art therapists deeply understand art materials’ sensory and therapeutic qualities and how they can psychologically impact and benefit people.
In addition, at Victorian Art Therapy, our creative art therapists use interventions tailored to our client’s needs. This people-centred approach facilitates and supports our clients in developing skills and coping strategies that help improve their health and reduce psychological distress.

At Victoria Art Therapy, our therapists understand the sensory, kinaesthetic, and symbolic power of art materials and how these elements can facilitate emotional expression and transformation. Each session is tailored to your individual needs and goals, drawing on a person-centred and trauma-informed approach that fosters coping skills, emotional awareness, and resilience. All art therapists working for Victoria Art therapy draw on the Expressive Therapies Continuum (ETC) framework to guide assessment, formulate treatment goals, and plan materials-based interventions tailored to each client’s developmental and emotional needs.
Is it just art making?
Not at all. Art therapy sessions are designed around you. Some may focus more on creative exploration, while others blend artmaking with reflective discussion and psychotherapy. What distinguishes art therapy from an art class is its therapeutic intent—each creative process is guided by a trained clinician to support psychological understanding, healing, and well-being.
Do I need to bring/buy anything?
No — all art materials required for your sessions are provided by Victoria Art Therapy. However, you are welcome to bring any personal items, images, or materials that hold meaning for you or that you wish to incorporate into your creative process.
Who can attend Art Therapy and do I need to be an artist?
Art therapy is suitable for people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. No artistic skill or prior experience is required—what matters is a willingness to engage in the creative process and explore your thoughts, emotions, and experiences through visual or non-verbal expression.
At Victoria Art Therapy, we warmly welcome individuals, groups, and communities from all walks of life. Our practice is grounded in inclusivity, embracing cultural diversity, disability inclusion, and respect for First Nations peoples.
- EXPLORE your own self-expression by taking part in art making
- DISCOVER the healing qualities through processes of creative inquiry
- INSIGHT into your lived experience
Why is it important to be able to express your self using the creative process?
The creative process in art therapy offers a powerful means of externalising the internal—giving form to thoughts, emotions, memories, and bodily sensations that may be difficult to articulate through words alone. Through image, colour, and movement, the art-making process provides a safe and contained way to explore and symbolise experience, fostering emotional regulation, self-awareness, and integration.
Engaging creatively activates both the mind and body, supporting neural processing, reducing psychological distress, and enhancing our capacity for reflection, connection, and self-compassion. As the artist Pablo Picasso expressed, “Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.”
By giving shape and voice to inner experience, art therapy helps release the “dust” of what burdens us—creating space for renewed vitality, authenticity, and a more connected sense of self.

How does a session look?
At Victoria Art Therapy
A standard art‑therapy session runs for approximately one hour and is shaped according to your individual goals, needs and preferences.
Initial session
In your first appointment we conduct an intake evaluation to clarify your reasons for coming, your background, your preferred artistic materials, and what you hope to achieve.
Assessment framework
You will complete pre‑ and post‑therapy assessments (at the beginning and end of your block of sessions) so that we can track progress, tailor our work, and evaluate how the therapy is supporting you.
Materials and process
Your therapist will ask you which art materials you prefer to use (paints, collage, drawing, clay etc.). As your process unfolds, new materials may be gradually introduced to meet your emerging needs and to support deeper exploration.
Verbal reflection and integration
Over time you may choose to engage more in verbal reflection on your artwork and experience. These reflective elements are noted in your file and inform the direction of future sessions.
Core emphasis
Crucially, the focus is on process rather than product — on what you feel, discover and develop, rather than on creating a “finished artwork”.

Art Therapy and Disability?
At Victoria Art Therapy, we warmly welcome people of all abilities. We understand that many individuals living with disability know the greatest challenges often come from the limits society places on them — not from within. Our space is designed to remove those barriers and honour each person’s unique way of expressing, creating, and connecting.
Through art therapy, clients are invited to explore new ways of expressing themselves, processing sensory experiences, and building confidence in their abilities. As a proud registered NDIS provider, we’re here to support each person’s journey toward greater well-being, participation, and self-understanding — all through the healing power of creativity.

Therapeutic Benefits
Research indicates that even a single 45-minute session of artmaking can significantly lower cortisol levels — the body’s primary stress hormone — supporting relaxation and emotional well-being.
(American Art Therapy Association)
At Victoria Art Therapy, our sessions are thoughtfully designed to harness these evidence-based benefits, helping clients reduce stress, restore balance, and reconnect with their inner sense of calm through the creative process.
In addition to the benefits highlighted throughout our website, art therapy offers a deeply restorative and holistic approach to healing and growth. Through the creative process, clients can experience:
- Enhanced sensory and motor integration – strengthening fine motor skills while promoting regulation through tactile and visual engagement.
• Calming of the nervous system – creative flow supports self-soothing, emotional regulation, and a reduction in stress and anxiety.
• Improved attention and concentration – art-making encourages focus, patience, and the ability to follow sequences and instructions.
• Safe emotional release – art provides a contained space for expressing and transforming difficult or suppressed emotions.
• Growth in social connection – collaborative and group art processes enhance communication, empathy, and shared understanding.
• Development of mindfulness-based coping strategies – fostering presence, grounding, and self-awareness in the face of stress, anxiety, and panic.
• Self-discovery and empowerment – promoting insight, emotional growth, and renewed confidence through symbolic and intuitive expression. - Gentle trauma recovery – by engaging non-verbal, sensory, and symbolic modes, art therapy allows for the safe processing of trauma and supports neural integration and healing.
• Support for chronic pain and illness – cultivating compassion toward the body, easing tension, and promoting mind-body connection.
• Access to deeper self-understanding – creativity bypasses cognitive defences, enabling authentic connection to emotions, values, and identity.

Trauma
Art therapy can be a gentler way of engaging in therapy for those who have experienced trauma. Art therapy offers a way to “triangulate” the relationship between the client and therapist, which offers a way to reduce the tension of being in therapy. The relaxing properties of some art materials can also offer a way to self-sooth. Art Therapy accesses different areas of the brain, rather than what just talking alone can do. These areas can be where non-verbal sensory-based trauma memories can be stored and processing these through engagement in art materials can help to heal developmental trauma through neuroplasticity.
Emotional Regulation
Art Therapy research in mental health has shown again and again that Art Therapy builds skills in emotional regulation. This may be because Art Therapy promotes self-awareness, sensory and bodily awareness, self- understanding and self -compassion. Art Therapy research also shows that art making can reduce cortisol (stress hormones) in the body after just one 45, minute session.
Chronic Pain & illness
Art Therapy is shown to help people reduce and/or cope better with chronic pain and illness. Art Therapy aids people to develop a compassionate relationship with themselves and their illness and/or pain, which is a vital aspect of chronic illness management. This reduces stress which can also be helpful to aid the bodies self-healing ability.
Gaining Insight & Self Discovery
Art making bypasses our verbal defence mechanisms and helps us to more fully experience and know ourselves. Art making is inherently an act which engages our emotions, values and identity. Mental health consumers who have written or contributed to Art Therapy research consistently report that an important aspect of Art Therapy to them is the ability to engage in a process of self discovery.
